Cats love routine. A new litter means a new smell, a different feel under their paws and a different sound when they dig. That is why even a better litter can be ignored if you introduce it overnight. The good news: most cats accept a new litter within 1–2 weeks if you switch gradually.
Why cats reject a new litter
- A different smell. Cats recognise their litter box mainly by smell. A new, unfamiliar scent can put them off.
- A different texture. Tofu pellets are larger and softer than fine bentonite. Some cats need a moment to get used to them.
- Stress. If the change coincides with a move, a new family member or renovation, your cat may react more strongly.
A 7–14 day transition plan
- Days 1–3: 25% new litter. Mix one part of the new litter with three parts of the current one.
- Days 4–6: half and half. If your cat uses the litter box normally, increase the new litter to half.
- Days 7–9: 75% new litter. The old litter stays only as a familiar touch.
- From day 10: 100% new litter. The switch is complete.
If your cat starts avoiding the litter box at any stage, go back to the previous ratio for 2–3 days.
The two-litter-box method
For especially picky cats: place a second litter box with the new litter next to the old one. Your cat will decide when to start using it. Once it chooses the new box more often, gradually reduce the amount of litter in the old one.

Proven tips
- Transfer the scent. Add a handful of clean old litter with a few clumps to the new litter. The familiar smell tells your cat what the box is for.
- Don't change everything at once. The litter box, its location and the litter are three separate changes. Introduce them one at a time.
- Keep it clean. During the transition, scoop clumps every day. Cats are more willing to test a clean litter box.
- Reward. Calm praise or a treat after using the litter box builds good associations.
When to see a vet
If your cat still eliminates outside the litter box despite a gradual switch, urinates often in small amounts or there is blood in the urine, it signals a health problem, not a litter issue. See a vet first. Read more about the causes in Why Does Your Cat Eliminate Outside the Litter Box?
Why switch to tofu litter
OTIS tofu litter is dust-free, clumps well, is 100% biodegradable, and small clumped portions can be flushed down the toilet. The pellets are gentle on paws, so most cats accept them quickly. If you prefer a fresh scent, choose OTIS Lavender. For the switch itself, start with the natural version, as cats accept a neutral smell more easily.
Order OTIS by 3:00 PM on a business day and we'll ship it the same day.
