1. Health issues – always check this first!
Before you start changing the litter or moving the litter box, you must rule out medical problems. If your cat suddenly stopped using the litter box, especially when urinating, it could be a symptom of a disease.
The most common health problems include:

Cystitis (often stress-induced – FIC),

Crystals or stones in the urinary tract,

Joint pain (especially in older cats, for whom stepping into a high-sided litter box becomes painful).
What to do? Schedule a visit to the vet and do basic urine and blood tests. If the cat associates the litter box with pain while eliminating, it will naturally look for other, soft places (e.g., a bed or carpet).
2. A dirty litter box and hygiene issues
Cats have a sense of smell many times more sensitive than humans. What seems clean to us might smell like an unbearable public toilet to a cat. If you don't clean the litter box often enough, your feline friend will simply look for a cleaner alternative.
